The Foundry Equation -- Pop-up Exhibition -- Saturday, June 22nd, 11am-3pm

Join us this Saturday, June 22nd from 11am-3pm as we participate in The Foundry Equation -- a one-day art initiative & open house!  We will be showcasing work by Waltham-based and Boston-born artist Leo Mancini-Hresko and Italian artist Daniele Cestari who recently spent time in Boston capturing the city.

Located at 101 Rogers Street, The Foundry is a 52,000 square foot building that was once a pump manufacturing facility, a motor freight station, and an aircraft parts factory among other things.  Donated to the City of Cambridge nearly two years ago, the building has remained empty since.  Due to growing worries about the building, the city is finally taking a good look at what would be the best use for the space.  While 10,000 sq. ft. has already been designated as "community space" there is still a bit of uncertainty about what to do with the rest of the space.

Here's where we come in!  The city has granted permission to hold a one day event in the space -- hoping to show off how creatively it can be used.  Thankfully, even with short notice, the great minds at FLUX BostonOpus AffairVoltage Coffee & Art, and Yes.Oui.Si have banded together over the past week to organize what is sure to be a wonderful event!  The art initiative and open house will feature a range of local creatives including artists, musicians, galleries, and numerous other art related organizations.

As Liz from FLUX Boston said:

"This isn’t a pipe dream. And 10,000 square feet of “community space” may just be the beginning. If enough troops are rallied, and enough buzz is generated, and enough $$$ ends up making enough ¢¢¢ to the city, the entire building could transform into a dedicated arts space; an art mecca right in the heart of Cambridge for students, performers, theater companies, teachers, musicians, arts organizations, and EVERYONE to enjoy."

The collaborative exhibition highlights the figure as an important subject in our modern world -- one that is both beautiful and a struggle to capture.  The theme of the show marries the often sacred and sensual use of the human back to represent form with the more abstract concept of what it means to be "back to back".  The participating figurative artists explored this theme in oils and their visual experiences will be shared at the exhibition opening.

Brett Gamache, 'Reclining Figure', 9 x 9, Oil on Linen.

Tom Grady, 'Spine', 34 x 34, Oil on Linen.

Back to Back has two distinct components -- one half is an invitational and the other is juried.  Invitational artists include: Damon Lehrer, Jon Nix, Leo Mancini-Hresko, Nick Ward, Rick Berry, Tony Apesos, Gene Dorgan, Paul Goodnight, Brett Gamache, Jim Burke, Freda Nemirovsky, Britt Snyder, Ann Hirsch, Tom Grady, Janet Monafo, Paul Rahilly, & Kelly Carmody.

Jurors are Damon Lehrer of BFAC, Liz Devlin of FLUX. Boston, Jon Nix, Fr. Iain MacLellan of Saint Anselm College, and Ali Ringenburg of Sloane Merrill Gallery.

Drawing the nude figure from life requires a particular kind of optimism,” says Aristides, “to see the importance of the figure as a subject matter in a time when many do not consider the human being as the crowning glory of nature or art.
