Three New Additions: Greg Horwitch, Daniel Robbins, & Kelly Carmody!

We are excited to announce the addition of Greg Horwitch, Daniel Robbins, & Kelly Carmody to the gallery!  All three have very different backgrounds and styles, making them each a unique addition to our roster of artists.

Greg Horwitch

Born in Boston, Greg received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and upon graduating, traveled to Italy with plans to continue his education.  He spent the next 12 years studying and then teaching at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence.  Greg recently moved back to the States and now lives in New York City although he pays frequent visits to Boston and mid-coast Maine -- even in the winter!  Greg's painting subject matter is diverse, but his first love is the human figure and narrative.

"The subjects vary, but the vehicle is always light.  The Italian word chiaroscuro literally means 'light-dark.'  Light renders the world visible to the eye; darkness renders it captive to the imagination."

Daniel Robbins

Coming from an artistic background, Daniel graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 with a BFA.  After participating in a number of shows in the Virginia & North Carolina area, Danny, who lives in Richmond, was featured in the Summer 2013 issue of Artists on Art Magazine.  Danny has been recognized for his talent on numerous occasions including receiving the Virginia's Finest Award at the Boardwalk Art Festival on multiple years in a row.

Kelly Carmody

We originally had the pleasure of working with Kelly last April when she was an invitational artist in our Back to Back Exhibition and are excited to announce that she is now a full time addition to the gallery!  She studied at the Massachusetts College of Art where she developed a strong love of the figure and continued her education ofter graduating by taking workshops and classes to further investigate her love of the Old Masters.  Soon after, she went on to study at the prestigious Art Students League in New York where she received a merit scholarship.  Her work has received awards and recognition from numerous associations and publications including the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Art Renewal Center, Studio Visit Magazine, Artist Magazine, and the Cambridge Art Association.  Kelly paints in a beautiful studio in the old Waltham Mill buildings along the Charles River.

We are delighted to have these three incredible artists join our roster at Sloane Merrill Gallery. Stop by to see their work in person, you won't be disappointed!

Studio Visit: Michelle Arnold Paine

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Michelle Arnold Paine's new studio space at the Waltham Mills Studios.  While the great north light shinned through gorgeous windows, we chatted about Michelle's work, picked up a few new paintings, and just enjoyed her space.

We always love getting a sneak peek into an artist studio, especially since each one is different.  We'd like to share a few pictures in the hopes that you will enjoy seeing it as much as we did.

Arneis Quartet + Christina English

We had a wonderful turnout for the Arneis Quartet & Christina English concert this past Saturday night!  The gallery was humming with beautiful music & delightful cocktails  -- the perfect combination to beat the slight chill outside.  Take a look below at a few images and a short video from the evenings performance.

A BIG thank you to Arneis Quartet (Heather, Rose, Agnes, & Daniel), Christina English (& friends!),  & Opus Affair for all their hard work in making this an unforgettable event!

In case you were wondering the Arneis Quartet gets their name from a white, Italian wine grape variety known as "the little rascal" -- a fitting name for this talented group, classic yet playful!

Boston Arts: Sculptor Ann Hirsch Immortalizes Boston Legend Bill Russell

During our Back to Back Exhibition in April, we had the pleasure of featuring local sculptor Ann Hirsch.  Her two beautiful iron on cast plaster pieces -- Watchers: Facepull & Watchers: Eyepoke -- were wonderful three dimensional additions to the mostly oil painting based show.

In January, after over a year of working on preliminary ideas, Ann was chosen by the Bill Russell Legacy Project CommitteeThe Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation to complete The Bill Russell Legacy Project at Boston City Hall Plaza.  Check out this great interview with Ann by the Boston Art Commission about her process and meeting the legend himself!

We can't wait to see Ann's sculpture & the entire hardscape project unveiled on November 1st from 2-4pm at City Hall Plaza.

Visuals: New SMG Postcards

A while back we made a wildly successful gallery postcard that quickly disappeared!  In trying to create something visual that people could take with them to remember the gallery, we have a new gallery postcard with images of some of the all-time favorite paintings that have graced the walls of SMG!

Swing by the gallery to snag one (and even one for a friend) before they vanish!  A little daily art inspiration to keep at your desk, in your studio, on your fridge, or even as a bookmark :)
